Detox: Your guide to why, how and when: Part 1

Detox: Your guide to why, how and when: Part 1

What is the #1 thing you can do for great health?

It's DetoxIt's like washing your insides so thoroughly that your body joyfully cheers you on by erasing fatigue, soothing your aches and pain, melting away your fat and reversing disease!

Really? All that from a simple detox? Yes! Because the biggest driver of most diseases is the toxic junk inside us all, clogging our poor body from doing what it naturally does so well, keep us healthy.

So where do all these toxins come from anyway? I was shocked when my body displayed signs of toxicity in October 2015. I had been a vegetarian organic food eating, exercising, non drinking skinny girl most of my life. How could I have toxins??!! Apparently I hadn't realized that toxins are attacking us thousands of times a day!

According to Dr. Mark Hyman, we are exposed to 6 million pounds of mercury and over 2.5 billion pounds of other toxic chemicals each year. He shares that there are over eighty thousand toxic chemicals in our environment and very few have been tested for long term effects.

We are living in a toxic soup of chemicals. But that is not the only toxic load we have. We also burden our little bodies with toxic overload from:

  • Cell phones
  • Chemicals in personal care products
  • GMO, antibiotics and additives in foods
  • Anger, jealously, frustration and other negative toxic thoughts
  • Chemicals in our dish washing liquid, our laundry detergent
  • Chemicals in our water supply
  • and more!

According to the nonprofit group EWG, the average newborn baby has 287 known toxins in his or her umbilical cord blood. Can you imagine how many toxins are in you after living a few decades?

So what does all that toxic exposure do to us? It makes us sick. Here are the typical symptoms of toxicity. How many do you have?

Some of the symptoms of toxicity you should look out for (from this article)

  • Fatigue
  • Muscle aches
  • Joint pain
  • Sinus congestion
  • Postnasal drip
  • Excessive sinus problems
  • Headaches
  • Bloating
  • Gas
  • Constipation
  • Diarrhea
  • Foul-smelling stools
  • Heartburn
  • Sleep problems
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Food cravings
  • Water retention
  • Trouble losing weight
  • Rashes
  • Skin problems
  • Eczema
  • Psoriasis
  • Canker sores
  • Acne
  • Puffy, dark circles under the eyes
  • Premenstrual syndrome
  • Other menstrual disorders
  • Bad breath

If you have more than a couple of these symptoms, a daily detox is your new best friend. I used to think detox was an annual exercise best done after Thanksgiving splurge. Turns out detox is a daily ritual, if you are breathing you should be detoxing in some way every single day. Since if you don't detox, you could end up with a more serious disease, like one of these listed by Dr. Mark Hyman, who says that many of our diseases are actually related to toxicity including:

  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Alzheimer’s or Dementia
  • Autism
  • Attention deficit disorder
  • Depression and other mood disorders
  • Insomnia
  • Heart disease
  • Chronic fatigue syndrome
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Cancer
  • Autoimmune disease
  • Food allergies
  • Arthritis
  • Digestive diseases like Crohn’s disease, ulcers, and colitis
  • Menstrual problems like heavy bleeding, cramps, PMS, menopausal symptoms, mood changes and hot flashes

So get started detoxifying already! Here are my three simple detox steps (simple to understand, tough to implement but we are here to help you!)

Step 1: Stop putting toxins inside you

A. Stop adding toxins via your thoughts during the day. You control what you think and how you react. So make a promise to yourself every morning, as soon as you wake up and before you pop out of bed, by speaking these words to yourself:

"I love myself. My health is very important to me. Which is why I won't get upset, irritated, frustrated, angry today. I will smile, laugh, forgive, forget and feel joyful no matter what comes my way."

B. Brush your teeth with toxic free toothpaste. Read the ingredients or buy this Trader Joe's antiplaque toothpaste

Same goes for that mouth wash, soap, shampoo, conditioner, lotion, foundation, perfume ....Easiest is to find the green numbered products on this website:

C. Buy organic fresh produce from local farmers market. If that sounds impossibly hard, try organic non bagged produce from Trader Joe's, Sprouts or even your local Safeway that now has a pretty decent organic fresh vegetables section.

D. Buy organic free range meat products including dairy, eggs and fish You can purchase on a budget from Trader Joe's or your local farmers market.

E. Read package labels for ingredients and stick to brands that care about you. Yes. there are brands who do care! Simple Mills is one I personally love. 365 Organic is another great brand which is still affordable! I buy most of my packaged products from as they have easy to compare options, real reviews and great discounts! Plus I can shop from home and get free delivery instead of walking overwhelmed down the aisles of Whole Foods buying things I don't need!

F. Stop or slow down on gluten, dairy, corn, soy, sugar, alcohol, caffeine and anything that you are allergic to (example nuts!) Don't know what you're allergic or sensitive to? There are a few tests you can do but its important to know as every time you eat something you have an allergy to your body treats it like a toxin and tries to attack it! In that process it creates inflammation and general fatigue and misery. Easiest test? Try to remove the most common allergens from your diet for a few weeks atleast and then add back one at a time while noting symptoms.

Don't think you can do it? Yes you can! If I, could do it for over 1 year, I know you can do it for a month! The secret? Finding replacements for all your favorite foods and tricking your body into getting used to the new tastes! It takes about 2 to 3 weeks but suddenly you'll be enjoying your Quinoa pasta, your stevia coffee, gluten free stevia brownies and almond flour tortillas.

G. Careful on what water you drink! We are mostly water, our blood is a liquid, and clearly toxic water is going to create a disaster inside. If there's one simple change you can make to impact the most, it's making sure you are drinking clean and pure natural water. Not the tap which is mostly filled with toxins. Invest in a water purifier or buy Arrowhead like I do.

H. Start breathing better air when you sleep. Finding out the list of toxins being sprayed in my community (I obtained the list from my county, so can you) broke my heart. I was at my wits end in trying to figure out why I was reacting to everything including water and someone had mentioned Roundup. So I got curious enough to spend 10 minutes making a few calls to request what was being sprayed. What I received was a list of over 21 chemicals being sprayed year round, including toxic Roundup! I drove straight to Costco and bought a decent air purifier so atleast when I sleep 7 to 8 hours at night my body is not being attacked by toxic pesticides and herbicides in the air.

I. Digital detox from cell phone and laptops.

Your cell phone emits incredible amounts of radiation specially when there is just 1 bar on top! That radiation maybe enough to cook your brain if you sleep with your cell phone near your head (on the night stand perhaps?!)  Laptops and cell phones should be kept outside your bedroom at night or at least away from your head and body so they don't interfere with your bodies cleansing activities at night.

Step 2: Stop creating new toxins

Step 3: Start pulling toxins out

Till then, check out your fridge and pantry and your bathroom to start replacing junk with health!! That will make Step 2 and 3 so much easier! Share this article with anyone suffering from chronic illness so they too can get started on their journey to health!
