What is Ghee? 

With its colossal reputation as the ‘elixir of life’, this extraordinary aromatic, golden liquid has more to offer than the naked eye sees… This buttery, grainy golden emollient is well respected for the several benefits of its internal consumption, however, there’s something more it can do for your skin... The Ayurvedic texts declare it as the answer for those who seek longevity, strength, a radiant complexion, intelligence, memory, wisdom, tenderness and more. Rich in vitamins A, D, E and K, a thick mane, smooth skin, a radiant face and a youthful look are very much in the kitty of the benefits of this wondrous elixir called ‘Ghee’. 'GHEE' is often known as 'Clarified Butter'. We slowly melt the butter down, and the lactose, casein, and protein solids are completely removed as well as the water. What remains is pure butter oil. It is the essence of the cream but is considered non-dairy. Ghee is categorized by the USDA as a pure, stable cooking oil. Ghee does not need to be refrigerated and if done properly, actually enhances with age.  

Benefits of Ghee 

Since ghee is the essence of the cream and is mostly short-chain saturated fat, it benefits many systems of the body. Primarily the mega dose of essential fatty acids found in ghee work to boost the immune system, rid the body of inflammation, directly feeds nerve and brain tissue, cleanses and strengthens the liver, and repairs all damaged cells in the body. The ghee helps with absorption and is an incredible carrier oil. It also helps rid the body of toxins. 
  • Ghee has been highly revered for thousands of years (primarily in India and Tibet) because it is considered one of the greatest healing substances known to mankind! 
  • The essential fatty acids in ghee help directly nourish the Neo-cortex of the brain and feed the tissue surrounding the nerve bundles, which are primarily made out of fat. 
  • Just as your energy travels best through the body if the cells are fully hydrated creating a smooth ‘highway’ for the energy to travel freely, ghee also nourishes brain and nerve tissue in a similar way, creating the ability for thoughts and nerve signals to travel efficiently and quickly from cell to cell.   • Ghee has also been known to assist with decalcifying the pineal gland. The pineal gland is responsible for our awareness.Many environmental toxins, harsh chemicals in foods and cleaning products, and living in modern day society, can all be contributing factors to a crusting or calcification over the pineal gland. Oils, like ghee help alleviate this problem. The ghee helps slough the calcification away…over time, healing this part of the brain and bringing a sense of greater awareness and connectedness with your environment and surroundings. 
  • Ghee will assist in balancing the fire element in the body. If you have too much or not enough digestive fire, which in Ayurveda is called ‘agni’, ghee helps bring balance to this.

  • Ghee is an excellent moisturizer: Take equal amounts of pure ghee and water. Blend them well together and apply the mixture to your skin. Massage it deep into the skin and wash off after 15 minutes with fresh cold water. Using ghee as a moisturizer for 2-3 times a week can make it incredibly soft and smooth. 
  • Ghee for Super Dry Skin: Using ghee both internally and externally helps to ward off the dryness of your skin. For external application, simply heat some ghee in a vessel and apply lukewarm over the body and massage. Take a warm water bath after two hours without using any soap. See the signs of aging also weaken on repeated application.
  • Ghee for cracked lips: Ghee makes for a superlative, natural and chemical-free lip balm! Simply apply it repeatedly to chapped lips for quick healing to get petal-soft lips.
  • Ghee for cracked heels: Applying ghee mixed with turmeric is a very effective recipe for cracked heels. Or mix 5 g of powdered pericarps of Terminalia chebula or Haritaki with 10 ml of ghee and apply on the affected area. Haritaki is anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial and helps reduce burning sensation, treating cracked heels. Keep applied overnight. Wear cotton socks to avoid soiling bed linen. Wash with warm water in the morning. Repeat every night till relief. 
  • Ghee for burning sensation and blistering of skin: Ghee applied over skin relieves dryness and burning sensation. It can be used as a first aid in minor burns. For severe burning, Ghee can be kept in the refrigerator and then a chunk of it can be applied to the affected area.
  • Ghee for undereye dark circles: Ghee helps to get relief from those ‘Panda eyes”. Just apply and massage some ghee gently on dark areas of your skin and sleep with it. Rinse your face in the morning. 
  • Ghee as a substitute to Bath oil: Being an excellent body massaging agent, ghee can replace your traditional bath oil too for uber hydration. It will give you a silky smooth skin. You may also combine equal quantities of ghee and jojoba oil and apply the mixture to your skin. Let it sit for half an hour and then take a shower to reveal soft, velvety skin. 
  • Ghee and hair care: Ghee can be massaged on the scalp to moisturize the scalp. It helps to strengthen the hair roots and remove dryness. It should be warmed a bit and massaged into the hair roots with finger tips and using the palms. The hair should be washed with warm water and a herbal shampoo after an hour. It proves to be rejuvenating this way for tired eyes too!  
  • Ghee for split ends: Mix equal proportions of ghee and castor oil and warm them. Apply the mix on the split ends. Rinse after an hour with lukewarm water. 
  • Ghee for lustrous locks: Ghee can make dry, rough and frizzy hair healthy-looking by conditioning it deeply. You just need to prepare a rich oil-blend by mixing equal amounts of ghee and olive oil or coconut oil. Warm the mixture. Apply liberally on the hair. Give your hair a thorough massage with it for 15-30 minutes and wash off with a mild herbal shampoo. Your locks will turn extremely soft and smooth.
